More than 50% of CA High School Students Participate in Extra-Curricular Activities
Students who compete in high school activity programs have better educational outcomes, including higher grades, higher achievement test scores, and higher educational expectations beyond high school.
Participation in high school activities is a valuable part of the overall high school experience, enhancing students’ school engagement and sense of belonging.
Co-curricular activity programs promote positive youth development and provide opportunities for learning a number of life skills and values not typically taught in classroom education.
Students involved in educational activities often have many healthier behaviors leading to better physical and mental health.
Participation in activity programs yields positive results after high school as well.
Co-curricular activities teach lessons that lead to better citizens.
Not only do individual students benefit from education-based activities, schools and communities benefit when more students are involved in co-curricular activities.
California Education Code (EC) Section 49010 provides the following:
"Educational activity" means an activity offered by a school, school district, charter school, or county office of education that constitutes an integral fundamental part of elementary and secondary education, including, but not limited to, curricular and extracurricular activities.
A pupil enrolled in a public school shall not be required to pay a pupil fee for participation in an educational activity.
Parent’s why are we afraid to question our public school leaders if this is what we know?
Parents are afraid they will cause a retaliation event against their student for disrupting the status quo.
Has this been known to happen? YES.
Should it be happening? NO WAY!Adults should be ashamed of themselves and held accountable for this poor behavior.
By the time parents realize that they have been “donafeed” to death, their students are in their junior year.
At this point parent’s are either too tired to deal with it anymore and they pay and move on; even worse
the student just quits the activity because they know their parents can’t afford to pay or they know, no matter how hard they work, practice, do extra work they will never be able to compete with the “checkbook” participant so they decide - just quit.
WORST – this is the kid that lives and breathes their activity and then one day - no more. This is the kid that sleeps with their football, glove, stick, pompoms, ballet slippers, etc. YOU KNOW THESE KIDS.
These are the kids that have increased absenteeism, have lost their identity, are now disengaged because they went to school for the extra-curricular – 50%!!!!!!!!
Parents are afraid of the Booster Parents – this all starts with the school administration. The administration allows the boosters too much control on campus. This needs to stop.
The School Board should APPROVE ALL Donations. The School Administration PROCURES EVERYTHING.
Extra-Curricular Teachers and Coaches should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER deal or worry about money. Programs know what they need to provide the program to the students – WANTS should always be directed up to the administration and if it is funded and approved it happens at the administration level and school board.
Administrators need to be in control of their school and school sanctioned extra-curricular activities NOT BOOSTER PARENTS.
Parents, let’s get empowered to change this behavior. We can do this, every school has that parent that is not afraid, find them and let them be your strength. It might even be you; you just don’t know it yet.
